The Way of Calvary!!
~Matt 27:35-36 NKJV 35 Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: "They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots." 36 Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there.~
Often in Christianity there is a tendency to skip to Sunday. There is a tendency to want to skip to the resurrection! Thank God Jesus rose from the grave but we must never forget the cost of the cross; the agony which granted us assurance of the eternal, the price of our purchase, and the suffering of our Savior. “The only way to God is the way from God – the cross.” (William H Willimon) One-third of the material in the four gospels has to do with the events of the last week of Jesus' life. The cross encounters us as an awful, actual, historical event, not an inward mode of consciousness. Though His death addresses our consciousness, it cannot be reduced to the contents of consciousness. It was an event. It happened to a man from Nazareth on a particular hill on a particular day (Augustine).” We each face our own challenges everyday and Jesus’ suffering is not only our example but more than that it is our saving salvation and our assurance of eternity. Jesus’ suffering is the way and there is provision in the way of His suffering!!! Perhaps we have known the last words from the cross too well, so that they no longer shock us. Let’s listen to “The God who loved us enough to die for us, now loves us enough to speak to us, to teach one last lesson before dying, so that we, hearing and overhearing these words, might not only live forever but also learn forever to live with Him.
Over the next 4 weeks as we approach Resurrection Sunday we are going to be taking a more in-depth look into the 7 last words of Christ!! As you join me in this journey keep your heart open to what Christ was saying and how it applies to us even today and to what the Holy Spirit is saying to you now through these words. We serve a Savior who thought we were worth going all the way to Calvary for. He courageously met the demands of Satan’s sin to free God’s captured creation. Let's be open to all He wants for us today no matter what the cost may be!!
