Framing Our World
Sometimes we can feel so stuck! What if change was possible? There are days when we would give anything for something, anything to change. It is so easy to feel powerless as if we are just subject to our circumstances and there is just nothing we can do about it. This is really a fatalistic outlook and not at all a Scriptural view of life or our ability to bring direction to it. There are a couple of Scriptures that bring tremendous hope to us in this regard. The book of Proverbs lends us significant insights into our ability to determine the direction of our lives. “For as he thinks within himself, so he is” (Provers 23:7a NASU).
This verse tells us that our life and actually the person we are is shaped by the thoughts we have. Our thoughts are powerful!!! We think things just happen to us when in some regards things happen from us. Our life flows out of us. Let me share another verse to bring this forward. “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23 NASU).
The Holy Spirit through the Scriptures is teaching us that our lives flow out of our hearts. Proverbs 4:23 from the New King James Version puts it this way: “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23 NKJV).
The phrase “the issues of” carries the meaning of “(geographical) boundary, or (figuratively) deliverance, (actively) source: KJV – border” (Strong’s Concordance). So we can deduce a 2-fold meaning here:
1) Our life flows out/originates from or out of our heart.
2) What is flowing out or our heart is determinate of the boundaries or the limits of our life.
The New Living Translation brings greater clarity to this. “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” (Proverbs 4:23 NLT).
What if we really believed that? What if we believed our lives were flowing from us rather than happening to us? What if we thought we could do something about it? This is a great encouragement to us. We aren’t just at the mercy of our circumstances we can change or determine the direction of our lives. If believers really believed this and acted upon it – how different our lives and in fact, our world would be. Understanding this concept is the key to transformation and the key to bringing the change the Gospel promises to people and to the very communities we live in.
Now that we have found the fountainhead, per se, of our lives how does this flow occur? How does what’s on the inside of us determine anything outside of us? The determinate current that carries forward our destiny is our words! (I really want to insert the emoji with the big eyes here!) If we can harness our words we can ride forward in our destiny for the Lord and for His glory! We can literally frame our world with our words! “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible” (Hebrews 11:3 NKJV).
Just as God stood on the edge of the nothingness and brought forth everything, so can we stand over our lives and begin to frame our lives with the will of God for ourselves and change the course of our lives. Jesus taught about the power that our words release and He gave a scathing rebuke to the religious of His day as He expected that they should have understood and utilized this powerful tool for good! “Brood of vipers! (That’s those religious guys!) How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things” Matt 12:34-36 NKJV parenthesis mine).
We have the tremendous and divine ability to bring forth or literally “eject” (Strong’s Concordance) from our hearts good and evil. If we desire to see change in our world we must first change the treasure! Once we fill the treasury of our hearts with the Word of God – we must subsequently release this arsenal of Divine ability out of our hearts with our words. Transformation can occur! It starts with what is in our hearts and what is flowing out of our hearts! Let’s begin today to take this to heart and then take our hearts to framing our world!
